Computer Failure

Statistically, most ECE computer hardware failures occur in the Summer and in the Winter. These seasons are also the worst of year for hardware repair projects (due to illnesses, holidays, etc).

We urge you to take a close look at your computing system, specifically, with regard to the following:

  1. Software and Data Backups
  2. Hardware Failure Options

Software and Data Backups and Restores

  • ECE Sun servers - are backed up by the ECE systems administration staff weekly.

  • ECE Staff Macs - The "Documents" folders are backed up weekly. The Business Office shared disk is backed up daily.

  • Unix Labs - Specific file systems on the following machines are backed up weekly: monsoon, foehn, typhoon, lepus, raman, sunshine, kfir, topaz.

For Unix backups, most ECE groups use the Sun 4GB-8GB 4mm DAT drive. This is available from the bookstore for ~$1025.

  • General Mac and PC backups - ECE users generally use either 4mm DAT (Sony or HP), Syquest, Iomega or Optical disk.

  • Other Options - SOE also can provide Unix or Mac backups on a recharge.

If your computer is being backed up by ECE systems administration staff and you need a file restored, send email to ecehelp.

Hardware Failure Options

ECE does not stock spare computers or computer parts. To prepare for a hardware failure, consider the following:

  • Stock your own spare parts (especially disk drives)
  • Enlist in a Hardware Maintenance Program
  • Consider the need for temporary rental or quick purchase of new equipment

The stocking of spare harware or the enlistment in a hardware maintenance program is strongly recommended for ALL computer equipment, particularly high end Unix workstations. While maintenance programs are similar to insurance programs, they also provide quick (generally, 4-hour) turnaround on repair or replacement of equipment.

Because of vendor repair backlog and lack of loaner equipment, a computer which is not under a maintenance contract can be down for more than a month. As an example, we have recently seen the following delay times:

  • 1GB and 2GB disk replacement - 3 weeks to 2 months
  • Sparc motherboard repair - 2 months
  • Disk drive data restore - 2 weeks

The ECE Computer Support Staff is available for recomendation of maintenance programs (two such programs are listed below). To enroll in a maintenance program:

  1. Notify ecehelp of your intent to maintain your computer.
  2. Communicate directly with the vendor (Sun, Quest, etc) and arrange a maintenance agreement.
  3. This will require the generation of a Purchase Order by your accounts analyst or staff support.
  4. When you have hardware problems with your maintained computer, ecehelp can assist you with contacting the vendor and describing the problem or you can contact the vendor directly.

SUN Silver Maintenance

Maintenance is available directly from Sun. Their "Silver Maintenance Program" is an 8-5 Monday through Friday onsite repair service with a 4 hour response time guarantee. If you require it, 7/24 service is available at a higher rate. Also, prices are slightly better for systems put under maintenance from Sun while still under warranty. Coverage includes the system CPU as well as all Sun peripherals (monitor, disks, memory, etc.), except Raid Arrays and printers.

Approximate Sun Silver rates are listed below. For exact pricing, contact Christine Sluman at Sun directly:
